How Robinsong applied Rosgen's Natural Channel Design Techniques to help shape a community's future
Field reconnaissance indicated an old river scar mid-way across the valley and scrutiny of photographs taken during recent flood events yielded a streak of ponded water through the valley that could only be what was left of the original stream channel. This discovery, and the creative solution that followed, vaulted a stream relocation project into a stunning example of Priority 1 Restoration. Through teaming with Chris Metcalf (who provided the stream's design) and Steve Jones (who implemented the stream's features), Jo Somers (Robinsong's Chief Engineer) and Robinsong's mitigation specialist Cynthia Robinson (who partnered with Metcalf on stream assessments) were able to relocate the Brier Fork of the Flint River to its original location down the center of the valley and restore an impaired waterway to a healthy, stable stream. The safety issue for the airport has been resolved and the health of one of Madison County’s major watersheds has been improved.
