Jo Somers, P.E.
Jo Somers provides Robinsong with in-house professional
engineering services. She has over thirty years of experience
in consulting and municipal engineering and a very thorough
understanding of all aspects of land development.
Beginning in the 1960s, she worked on numerous wastewater
projects providing services to the newly formed Metropolitan
Government of Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee.
Jo moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1971 and changed
her emphasis from wastewater engineering to general
civil engineering. Her work has included developing
plans and specifications for the construction of military
training facilities, marinas, hazardous waste cleanup
and landfills, airports, municipal road and drainage
projects, and numerous subdivision and site developments
projects.
Jo developed a specialty in residential land development.
Notable projects included large master planned residential
developments such as Hampton Cove golf course community,
the Ledges, Heritage Plantation and Clifts Cove. Jo
also served as the City Engineer for fast-growing Madison,
Alabama, for five years.
She became interested in wetland mitigation in 1996
while developing plans for Heritage Plantation, a subdivision
in Madison, Alabama. Mitigation was a relatively new
concept and a wonderful follow-on to the many years
of land development projects. In 1998 Jo became a partner
in Robinsong and was instrumental in the establishment
of Robinsong's Flint Creek Wetlands Mitigation Bank
in Hartselle, Alabama. She provided design/build plans
for the hydrological modifications to the 653 acre site
that reclaimed the wetlands from farmland. She joined
Robinsong full time in October of 2004.
Jo received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt
University in 1967.
